Joint Commission Patient Safety Goals.
- GOAL 2
Improve the effectiveness of communication among caregivers. - GOAL 7
Reduce the risk of health care-associated infections. - GOAL 9
Reduce the risk of patient harm resulting from falls. - GOAL 9b
Implement a fall reduction program including an evaluation of the effectiveness of the program. - GOAL 13
Encourage patients’ active involvement in their own care as a patient safety strategy.
Infection Control
Traditional pullcord stations utilize a cotton/nylon material that is notorious for picking up fluids. Rauland’s stations use a red infection-prevention cord that greatly lowers the risk of cross contamination from one patient to another. The stations also feature a Microban® Bio-Shield that covers the two pushbuttons at the top of the station. These stations directly address Joint Commission patient safety goal number 7.
Microban® technology is built into a product during the manufacturing process and becomes an intrinsic part of the product inside and on the surface. When microbes, such as bacteria, mold and mildew that can cause stains, odors and product deterioration come in contact with the product surface, Microban® protection penetrates the cell wall of the microbe and disrupts key cell functions so that the microbe cannot function, grow or reproduce.
Patient Safety and Satisfaction
The stations also provide patient safety and satisfaction with bath stations capable of direct audio communication to the caregiver. The nurse can now talk to the patient to address the patient’s needs rather than rushing into a room without knowing what the problem is. This feature also serves as a benefit to patients after a fall because they have the audio assurance that a caregiver understands their needs.
The red button at the top of the station can be customized to individual unit and room needs. We often suggest allowing patients to use it when they have a sample ready for the nurse to pick up for lab work. Pressing the button sends a call reminder to the pager, wireless phone, console, or computer location of a caregiver or lab staff. The Responder 5 system is completely designed around your hospital’s needs and workflow; helping address Joint Commission Patient Safety Goal 2,9,9B and 13.e.
Installation and Design
Rauland designed the station to fit on a single gang box despite looking somewhat larger. This practical solution allows a facility to easily retrofit existing bathrooms with minimal disturbance. The station also features a large Bell-style pullcord built for patients with limited hand strength and a screwless design with clean lines to allow for easy disinfection.
